Time to join Nato

This is Admiral Frank Bradley. I often wonder what idea of himself a man can have going around with stupid ribbons like this on his chest and ridiculous gold braid on his sleeves and his hat. And further what kind of people take him seriously, who is impressed by this silly dressing up.

Anyway that is not my point.

On the second of September last Frank oversaw a US warship which fired on a boat allegedly carrying drugs. The boat sank, but two of those on board survived. Frank then ordered a second strike to kill the two people in the water.

Hang on a second @cremeegg ...Secretary of Defense Hegseth stated in a post on X: "Admiral Mitch Bradley is an American hero, a true professional, and has my 100% support. I stand by him and the combat decisions he has made — on the September 2 mission and all others since".

If he is an American hero surely we should bow to his heroism and professionalism?

But American military types and the police take this fancy dress stuff very seriously. Low self-esteem seems to be a selection criterion for them and the more gold braid, insignia, flashes, numbers, and badges they can gather on their clothing, the greater they are, in their own eyes at least.

Provided it won’t affect our neutrality I’m all for renting out a large part of Cork Harbour to NATO or the Chinese or anybody. I’d be calling for all US military planes which require stopovers to use Cork Airport instead of Shannon. Anything that’ll boost the local economy, I’ll support.

Now, if somebody needs a home for them newfangled air and sea drones Cork Harbour is the place, provided we can get somebody to feed them.

I don't want to join NATO. I want the EU to have a defensive military capability which is sufficient to allow us to act independently of the US. As things stand we don't and can't and so have to bow to their wishes.

I find that unsatisfactory.

All militaries like their uniforms and medals.
True, they have a very strong psychological influence on those who serve as well. There have been multiple studies showing how they make soldiers more cohesive and committed, and ensuring there is clarity or role and rank in combat situations. Essentially, give your soldiers a fancy uniform and they will be more willing to die for your cause.

Uniforms also help unit cohesion... and minimise the amount of friendly fire incidents. During the 1991 Gulf War around a quarter of US casualties were caused by friendly fire.

I would agree with that but it is wishful thinking.

Its not in US's interest to lose control of Europe. In the same way Britain does not want to lose control of Irish airspace.

The EU project started off as a peace project to end centuries European conflict and to harness and pool our collective resources for the benefit of each other. I don't see how the EU could act 'independently' on the military front and I would be against it.

The previous century holds enough lessons, never mind what went before. Even in recent times one of the 'big 4' European economies decided it would go its own way from now on showing how fickle this project can be.

Britain and France have been enemies and rivals far longer than they have been friends. God only knows if the Germans got irritated once more what might happen.

The US can project Russia to be the bogeyman for the forseeable future, and the rest of Europe bowing to its wishes to move NATO to surround Russia on numerous flanks.

Europe needs to reach out the hand of friendship to Russia. This current conflict has US interests at heart, not Europe. It is the US that is the provocateur in this conflict.

The US caused Russia to invade Ukraine? Right. That’s all you need to say to show your true colours. Comrade.

Europe tried that, Russia had a seat at the G8. Europe bought Russian gas, which Putin then threatened to shut off when it suited him. If Russia kept it's army within it's own borders then there's no threat from NATO or Europe.
Putin needs conflict to stay in power, the same way Netanyaho does.

I have no stake in this game. I'm Irish and and proud of our military neutrality.

I want Ukraine to be restored and Putin, Netenyahu, Trump, Obama, Biden, Blair et al to face justice in The Hague.

I want to restore European relations with Russia as were occurring pre-2014 when, at least London and other European capitals had open arms for Russian oligarchs. ‍

What happened? Was Russia having too much indirect influence on 'Western values' with its billions being welcomed with open arms into cities like London?

Did Putin, a Russian nationalist and loyalist, see those oligarachs as traitors, fraudsters? Raping the wealth of the Russian nation following the collapse of USSR.
Perhaps, maybe, and wanting to clip their wings as they indulged in the excesses of wealthy 'Western values', he poisoned some or had others murdered? Signalling to others that Russia was not finished and it would come to reap vengance on those it saw as traitors?

I don't know. I think it is interesting and happy to discuss and explore.

Regrettably, you and many others have a blind-folded view of these affairs that you automatically take a parrot approach to government and media propaganda.
Seriously, who are the puppets?

This is a short documentary following events since the USSR collapsed. It is based on well-known academic Jeffrey Sachs version of events.

Jeffrey Sachs: Understanding the Ukraine conflict

I don't proclaim it to be truth, and nothing but the truth etc...but it holds more credence with me than the propaganda spouted by European and US governments through its media contrary to Western values shared by Europeans, Americans and by hopefully, one day Russians.

Lumping all of those people in with Putin is a classic tactic of misdirection. Shameful.

Okay. I don't. I don't want masses of money from the Middle East and Russia undermining the institutions of power and weakening the power of the electorate.

Absolutely. Joseph Conrad wrote a book called Heart of Darkness. London was the place he was referring to, not the Congo. "The City" is the centre of the most corrupt money laundering racket in the Western World. It makes the Swiss look clean.

No, absolutely not. He and his cronies wanted their power and money and they took it.

You do know. You know that's absolutely not the case and yet you pose it as a question in an attempt to insert it into the conversation. That's another classic act of misdirection.

Putin has used his position as dictator to make himself one of the richest people in the world with a fortune estimated at $200 billion.

Regrettably, you and many others have a blind-folded view of these affairs that you automatically take a parrot approach to government and media propaganda.
Another false equivalence: The Western media can be biased and in many cases is biased but there are numerous sources in the centre who have a track record of impartiality. In Russia Putin has murdered journalists and closed down Russia's media and turned the now State run media into a propaganda outlet. Yet you accuse the Western media of bias and spreading propaganda. That's another tactic of Russian sponsored influencers online.

Seriously, who are the puppets?
The Russians and Putin's supporters.

Jeffrey Sachs: Understanding the Ukraine conflict

I think this is the most honest account of matters I've heard on the Ukraine/Russian conflict.

It starts with the controversial words "this is not an attack by Putin on Ukraine in the way that we are told every day."

I'd be interested in hearing/reading from viewpoints of merit from journalists, academics, that may counter the view of Sachs.

Most people here I'd imagine will know Sachs but if not here is his Wikipedia page to gauge his creditionals

There is no point in responding to the bizarre outbursts above that say one thing in one breathe and contradict themselves with the next.

The personal attacks on @Sister Sara are completely unwarranted. I am disappointed to see this from posters who often make valuable contributions here.

Make your point, rebut those you don’t agree with, and leave out questioning other’s motives.

It's reasonable to question the motives of those who consistently act as an apologist for a tyrannical dictator and misrepresent the facts.

Who is the shameful apologist?

Imagine wanting Putin to be brought before The Hague? Is that the view of a Putin apologist?

Imagine lumping a State leader that sanctioned an illegal invasion of a sovereign state based on wholly false intelligence and lies, in with Putin?

Imagine lumping Putin in as a war-criminal with a State leader who actually has an international arrest warrant to face charges of war crimes like Netenyahu?

Its clear who the apologist for war crimes and tyranny is.

I share the views of Sachs, either rebuke them with points of substance or stop your bare-faced lying about my views on Putin or any other matters.
