Time flies

Before Covid I never felt my age, I was doing things that any young to middle age person does like cycling up mountains that would bend your bones and descending them like a bat out of hell, got really fit during Covid where I was contesting some Strava KOM's with the whippersnappers of the day

Then one day in 2023 it all came to an end when I started to question my safety out there and why I was doing it and that was it, haven't cycled since and that's also when the ageing started
Maybe it was more the novelty of having retired early had worn off, you were all excited about being able to go cycling whenever you wanted after retiring. Then by covid and all the doom and gloom during that period you started to focus on safety and health etc and the novelty of going cycling everyday had worn off.
You are only approaching 60 that is not old, it could be that you have too much time to reflect on these things which you wouldn't have if you were still working. You would have to make yourself goto work whether you wanted to or not.

Totally agree, but my point was not that I'm "old" at 60 but rather that I'm "older"
it could be that you have too much time to reflect on these things which you wouldn't have if you were still working.
And that's the beauty of retirement, it gives you the time and head space to access your "default mode network" and think about these things

Like it or not at 60 I'm probably in the last quarter of my life, yes 20 years is a long time,
The length of my first mortgage and I thought that would never end,
But when I look back at the last 60 years I think to myself, by God did that pass quickly, better get a move on and get that bucket list finished ;)

You are two thirds of the way through your adult life. Since men don't really become proper adults until we are about 30 (at least) and your life expectancy at 60 is 24 more years you could say that you are probably closer to half way through your adult life.

I suppose my point was that alot of older and retired people stopped doing things they used to do before covid. The covid restrictions and obviously all the media fixation on it here frightened the bejaysus out of many older people as a result. Everyday the covid numbers and deaths being announced at 6pm news. We now know those statistics were not accurate and very flawed.
People that used to goto the pub stopped going and then never returned , when older people over 60 do that it is not because they are suddenly fixated on health or have found an exciting new hobby or partner, their world really just became smaller. It is easy to drift into that and just stay home all the time especially if you have other ailments.
It was because you said you gave up cycling during covid that brought me to this, however I am aware that it was probably unrelated to covid the reason you gave it up.
You also hear of people suddenly getting very old once they retire from a job because a job keeps people engaged and fitter, and socially connected.
