Is it safe too tile over vinyl as long as the vinyl is well stuck down. Will flexible adhesive be good enough on its own to stick to the vinyl or should i put down a primer first. I am a tiler myself and have tiled over ceramic tiles before but not vinyl so i guess there is always something else too learn. Thanks very much people.

Ok for one its not mad. Years ago a tar like substance was used too stick vinyl tiles down, not the crappy like stuff they use today so the vinyl is just too impossible to lift. I as a tiler know that it is possible too tile over vinyl but was just making sure of the right way too do it. So unless you actually know about it, please go annoy someone else with yere sad comments. Thanks
I don't think there is any need for this remark. Comments are comments regardless of what you think of them, surely this is what you wanted when you posted here asking for advice. Im sure the other posters were just offering the advice that it is not a good idea to tile over vinyl...
Advising me to sign myself in. Not very nice now is it. And going back 2 my questions. I said i wanted to know does the vinyl need priming or will the flexible adhesive work on its own. How does the answer "bad idea" answer my question. Im looking for answer to the question, not comments.

It is a good idea Brendan. Since i posted this thread everybody has picked it up wrong. All i wanted to know is should i prime vinyl before tiling or is flexible adhesive good enough on its own without priming. Its that simple. I never asked did people think it was a good idea. Please close the thread so since people just dont understand a simple question. Its getting very frustrating.
There are a number of reasons why I believe tiling on the vinyl would be problematic:
- there is no guarantee that the vinyl adhesive will not break down and release from the substrate. The key to good tiling is the base, if it is no good it will reflect in the finish.
- what about the condition of the vinyl itself? it could delaminate, separating the top finish layer (and the tiles) from the lower well stuck adhesive section.
- there is no information as to what the substrate is below the tiles; is it wood or concrete?
DMC, there was no intention to be insulting. I was considering the view of the hassle factor if it all goes wrong. I do think if you , as a tiler, are not considering the above, then you are asking for trouble by tiling on the vinyl. Do you need that headache on a job?
If you can get a fixing into the subfloor (whatever is below vinyl) I would go with that which you know, and fix WBP plywood over the vinyl, sandwich the problem layer and tile directly onto the WBP. You know that this will work and thus eliminate the doubts and concerns over the longer term viability of the primer on vinyl.
