This company rang me the other day doing a water "survey" and told me I might win a box of chocolates. A few days later they rang back to tell me I had won the chocolates and they would like to do a free water test for me if I could spare half an hour.

Anyway a man came to my house and tested the tap water and gave us a sample of the pure water and explained all about the gunk thats in our tap water etc.

Anyway the bottom line was 1800 euro for one of these systems which would guarantee me pure drinking water.

Anybody any views on this topic?

He also tested the water that came from a Brita filter and it had half the impurities that tap water had.

If you have concerns about your water quality, get it tested independently, not by someone who has a vested interest in seeing the results go in one particular direction.
 
1800? Yikes!! Nice cheap way of getting their name out though, giving a box of chocolates! I would steer well clear personally - it's hardly an independent survey he carried out like! Personally I'm quite happy using a Brita filter.
 
I'm quite cynical about these operaters. They visited the neighbourhood last year (4 year-old houses) and told one of our more gullible neighbours that her central heating system would collapse within ten years because of the state of the water. Conveniently they could fit water filters for a couple of grand.

Can anyone give evidence of them ever calling and saying "Well your water is fabulous actually. Nothing for us to do here. Carry on." I doubt it. My parents and grandparents never had any water problems with their houses, nor have I ever heard of anyone experience same, although I'm sure there is the odd case here and there.

IMHO many of the companies involved in this practice are preying on people's insecurities. If in doubt why not get an independant plumber in to do a survey.

At the end of the presentation he tried to convince us to sign up there and then, with a finance plan and all in place - I think the approach was to try and shock us into purchasing before thinking about it.

The test involved passing an electric current across the water which burnt all the impurities. The tap water looked quite nasty after the presentation but his water sample was perfect. The Brita water looked half as dirty as the tap water though.
 
We had a guy call to us last year, quoting similar prices for a system that would give us "pure" water. I decided to hear him out as I had been looking into getting a water softening/filtration system anyway.

He was a total chancer. He did a couple of "tests" on our water to demonstrate that we were taking our lives in our hands by drinking it. It's a long time since I studied the little bit of chemistry that I know, but it was painfully obvious that this guy hadn't a clue what he was doing or talking about. He was a sales rep. trying to blind the punters with big words.

He had a kind of slide-show mounted in a ring binder. There were some slides about high-profile, satisfied existing customers to try and make it look legit. It said things like "Western Health Board" in big, coloured print, but if you were quick enough, you saw the very small grey print immediately above saying, "Individual Employees of the". In other words, he tried to make it look like the Health Board (and also the Garda and so forth) were in some way endorsing the product.

He claimed he swore by the product himself and would only now drink water that had been treated by it, yet there was a definite whiff of last night's beer off him. Now, if he had a machine that could turn our water into beer, I mightn't have escorted him from our premises quite so quickly.

Yes, I got the smallest box of roses that you can get, and they weren't out of date either and I have them all eaten!

This guy showed me that the RAF have it in all their bases and claimed that this was in place so that terrorists couldn't contaminate the water supply, and laid it on thick about the current threat of terrorists to our water supplies.

My advise to people if this company ring is to let them do the presentation but don't purchase anything on the night - do some research first.

PS they also offered a bottle of wine instead of the roses.

I didn't have the pleasure of a visit from these guys but was recently advised by a close friend to avoid at all costs tap water for drinking as it is more than likely contaminated by fertilisers, decaying pipes, and all the s*it that goes inevitably into a service you don't pay for.(not that paying for it would assure any more quality checks, IMO)

Anyway, he suggested to get one of these water distillers, which I think are around 300e...this is a model that you can fit in the kitchen for a normal household need. Its powered by a mains plug and I think it pretty much distills and stores water. He said you might want to add some salts back into the water later to correct for taste and lost minerals.

He actually has set up a bigger version of it in the loft that takes care of the whole water supply.

I've simply started buying bottled water for the time being but would be curious of anyones opinion if its worth plunging for these kind of devices....

We have a water filtration system in our house- because we have a private well and we tested the water and found it full of iron, etc. So we got the system installed when the house was built and it cost around 1000 eur but it didnt include a UV lamp to kill e-coli, so we are currently thinking of getting one installed by the same guy for about 600 eur. Hes a local, and is great in that he preempts the need for more salt and drops it round without asking, tells us when a service is due etc. If you're serious about getting a filtration system fitted, get some more quotes- and remember a local may be better for ongoing maintenance.

But we didnt get any roses...
 
Testing

Does anyone know where one can get one's household tap water tested independently. I thought that the local Pharmacy might have a kit of some sort, but no. They suggested the local Council, but would they really tell me that the water they control is bad?

Won't mention any names but the place that tests our water will not test council water. Don't know if this is their company policy or whether they have been told they cant.

Not hijacking Your thread Jister but had someone apply the same technique selling a hoover - free box of chocs (Aftereights! - Yummy). Came in and cleaned the floor for free- for which he could show us that there is an 'infestation of dustmites in the house' - we were overrun with the little feckers. The hoover was about €2k or thereabouts. Nice machine, nice selling technique but that money pays for a nice little hollier to visit the Spanish dustmites!

Private wells
If your water supply comes from a private well that supplies only your own house, you are responsible for monitoring your own water supply. You can do this by contacting the Environmental Health section of your local health board, who can organise testing to be carried out. It is not recommended that you take a water sample yourself as equipment has to be sterile. If the health board is testing your water for you, you must bear the cost of the testing yourself and if your water supply is contaminated, you must organise and pay for any treatment that has to be carried out.

If you want a scare, read this [broken link removed] from the EPA. It doesn't have a good opinion about private or group water schemes.

On the upside, the Govt is spending approx €500M upgrading our water infrastructure over the next few years. Though whether this commitment will survive the election is anyone's guess.

yep - had to listen to the sales spoof though - not really sure if it was worth it!!
