The gross salary you actually need to take home €3k, €4k or €5k a month (2026 figures)

I keep seeing people ask "what do I need to earn to bank €X a month after tax?" and never a straight answer, so I sat down and worked it backwards from the 2026 rates (PAYE, USC and the PRSI change that kicks in from October). Sharing in case it's useful, and I'd be curious whether it matches what people are actually seeing on their payslips.

For a single person, standard credits, no pension contribution:

  • €3,000/month net ≈ €43,300 gross
  • €4,000/month net ≈ €65,800 gross
  • €5,000/month net ≈ €90,500 gross
The jump from €4k to €5k a month is the one that got me: you need roughly €25k more gross to add €1k a month net, because every euro over €44k is taxed at 40% + USC + PRSI. The marginal rate is brutal once you're in the higher band.

Two things I'd love the collective wisdom on:

  1. For the married/jointly-assessed folks, how much lower does the gross drop for the same net? I make it a few grand, but curious what people see in practice.
  2. How much does maxing your pension change the gross you'd need? I know it's the obvious lever but I'd like to see real examples.
Thank you

There are quite a few tax calculators available online. If you play with them, you should be able to find answers to all your questions and identify different examples.

Yeah, I did tried a few of those calculators and I think the most complete and accurate is the IrishPAYE.ie I think these are great tools but not many people know they exist.

My spreadsheet [https://taxcalc.eu/monthlyss/Employee PAYE calculator.xlsm, uses macros so tends not to be permitted in corporate environments] computes an annual gross as follows for a single person with standard tax credits and who is obliged to auto-enrol for pension purposes (compulsory if not already paying into a pension):

Monthly net of €3,000= annual gross of € 44,313.
Monthly net of €4,000= annual gross of € 67,705.
Monthly net of €5,000= annual gross of € 93,370.

These calculations use the mixed PRSI rates for 2026 and will provide the target net pay for months January to September. As PRSI rates will change from October, the net reduces marginally for those months by around €8. I didn't modify the calculations for this impact.

@deadlyduck Excellent I will give it a try. Thank you. I noticed the numbers do work with rates JAN-SEP 2026. irishpaye.ie shows the two values one from JAN to SEP and OCT to DEC
