Tax Return..Medical Expense Query - what to deduct?

Hi - Hope you can help? I have to do a tax return and I understand that I should enter my medical expenses less any reimbursement through VHI or Medical Insurance of any description. I have both VHI and Hospital Saturday Fund cover - Last year we had a new baby - The VHI covered the 3 nights in hospital although not the Semi Private Fee or scans and I received a one off "birth grant" from HSF for 500 Euro - Do I deduct the 500 Euro from the initial Semi Private Fee and scan total? Just wanted to be sure I am doing the right thing...Many Thanks
 
You first deduct any refunds received from both the VHI & HSF - you can claim any medical expenses, including "alternative" therapies - even theraputic massage etc. Claims are now only allowed at your basic rate of tax (was at the higher rate until 2008). However routine dental expenses are disallowed, with the exception of route canal work, crowns etc.
