Tax refund due from period of unemployment?

My husband and I got married in 2008 but have not changed our status with Revenue. I work full time and pay tax at the higher rate. My husband was working and paying tax at higher rate until end March and then was made redundant. He claimed Jobseekers Benefit for 4 months, and then began a new job in Northern Ireland in August. We live in the South.

Can my husband claim a tax refund for the start of the year when he was working? Or should I ask for us to be assessed as a married couple at the end of the year and claim his credits for the portion of the year he was unemployed?

As he is working in the UK, he will be liable to UK tax and National insurance.
As an Irish resident he will be liable to Irish tax - but can claim cross border relief.
It is best for you to stay taxed on single tax credits and have adjusted at end of year.
You may need professional help with trans-border relief claim.
