Hi

my father passed away and left a considerable sum of money to my mother. She had to do a grant of probate which is now at its final stages. Her solicitor wants to make a cheque out for the full amount and lodge in my mothers account. At the moment this money is with the solicitor.

Before this happens, my mother wants to gift some of this money to myself and my siblings. She asked her solicitor how to do this and are there any tax implications but the solicitor only suggested she seek advice from a financial advisor.

Before we do this, is there any information on this that we need to know?

Regards

You and your siblings would have a gift threshold of 225k each before paying CAT. This would be the aggregate of all gifts/inheritances received from someone in the group A category (parent to child) since 05 Dec 1991.
