Tax free allowance

I have recently been made redundant and am on jobseekers. My wife is earning approx 30k a year. We have both always been assessed seperately. Should my wife now claim married tax free allowance and if so what does she have to do in order to put this in place. Finally can it be backdated to the date of my redundancy.
