Hi I recently went back to work after a few years minding the kids at home. I am married and I earn 36400 . My husband earns 105k. Is it more beneficial to the household for him to get most of my credits. ? I am trying to figure out the practical difference between us being assessed individually or as a married couple. And even assessed as a married couple can we choose the split in the amount of credits to be divided? TIA.

I assume you've already been jointly assessed? Just keep it that way - there are no disadvantages. You can easily move credits / bands between you online if your circumstances change during the year.

Once you've taxable income in excess of 35,300, it doesn't make a difference what way the bands / credits are split.

However, if you're contributing to a pension, or planning unpaid leave, take that off your salary. You might have some tax band to allocate to your husband. But you'll be paying enough tax to use all your credits.
