I am thinking of doing the AITI tax consultant course. Can anyone advise me is this a good course. Also I am currently unemployed so is thewre any means of getting state aid for this course.

I decided on a career change a few years ago from IT into this area.

I completed Part 1 and Part 2 whilst still in my IT job. Then I made the plunge (huge drop in wage) and obtained a job in taxation with a multinational. I passed the final AITI exams last Sept but unfortunately after 18 months work, I was made redundant. I have being trying for a few months to get a job in tax or as a trainee accountant but there is very little out there. (I am not based in Dublin so perhaps things are better there).

There is no state aid and no tax relief for the costs of this course.

I would recommend doing an accountancy qualification in the current environment first, you will get 20% relief on fees incurred towards this.

Why not do the Tax technician course with ITI? It takes only a year, so you will have a qualification to show employers sooner, also very practical. The AITI course is expensive, and at least 3 years, if all goes well.

Im doing the TMITI this year. Just got an email on AITI, you need honours degree, im not sure was that a requirement last year. But yea TMITI for me, complete career switch at least I (could) have someting at the end of the year.

sounds tough-did any of you guys ever thing of having your own tax business as this was kind of my hope

Long term I would like to do this but personally I think it would be imperative to have a number of years experience in a practice environment first.

Regarding setting up your own practice, it can be quite difficult to break into the circle. Depending on what type of work you are looking for, you will probably always get the tax return type work, but the meaty and juicy corporate project work can be difficult to get, as it will go to the reknowned names.

As an aside, the indemnity insurance can be expensive.

Yes, a lot of Solicitors, Accountants are going into tax. A number of the larger tax practices have let people go, so there have been cut backs.

Like every other walk of life, there are mediocre tax consultants but unless you have a real flair for it, I mean actually designing schemes instead of processing numbers, you would find it difficult to sustain your own practice.

I applied for TMITI today. €2000, all in for the year. Paying out of Redundancy. Is there any relief or grant I can get on that. I know its not listed on Revenue for tax relief, but can re-training out of redundancy fall under any scheme?? Ta
