Tar on wooden floor - removal?

I have blobs of tar near the front door on a solid oak wooden floor. Is there any way to safely remove the tar without taking off the finish? It's driving me nuts...even when the floor is clean, I still see them

Try rubbing hard, a small amount of petrol on the effected spots. This should clrean the floor.

Petrol will shift them but I would try rubbing them with margarine first.

A little more gentle on the finish than petrol.

A small spray of WD40 may do the trick.
