Sunami donations for employees

I have been asked by a couple of employees if they can make tax-free donations from their saleries. Anybody know if this is possible.

If they donate at least €250, the charity assuming that it is Revenue-approved, can get the benefit of their tax relief. See [broken link removed] for further details.

I got a mail about this yesterday:

Hi all,

We've all been shocked and horrified at the tsunami devastation in Asia. It needs no introduction - with over a hundred thousand dead, and millions homeless, its almost beyond words.

For those of us who haven't had an opportunity to make a donation towards the international relief effort, or who would like to help even more, here's our chance.

A campaign has been organised called "Work A Day For Free".

The gist of it is very simple - participants will volunteer to donate a day's wages, or a half day's wages or whatever they can afford, to the Irish Red Cross. The Irish Red Cross are fully behind the initiative.

The national Work A Day For Free day will be this Friday, 7th January. Those taking part will simply work the day as normal - however, rather than being paid for that day, their company will donate their gross wages to the Irish Red Cross instead. The beauty of this, as well as being so easy, is that the company can donate the gross amount of the wages, including any tax that would otherwise be paid by the company and the employee. The result of this is that up to 42% more will be donated!!

All the information you need can be found on the website: [broken link removed]

The success of this initiative will depend on two things: spreading the word, and getting your companies to agree to take part.

The first part is easy - please, please send this on to everyone you know.

The second part is also down to you: if you would like to take part, please get in touch with your HR department and let them know. We're confident that companies will be keen to do what they can to help with the tremendous relief effort that is so badly needed, but they can't do it if you don't let them know!
