My son has applied for a course in DCU next Sept. He is currently unemployed and is in receipt of rent allowance. He currently lives away from home. Is he entitled to rent allowance as a student? He hopes to apply for the back to education scheme.I understand that DCU on campus accomodation does nt accept rent allowance.Any advice please.

He will not be entitled to Rent Supplement as a student.

There are exceptions for persons who are in receipt of Back to Education Allowance or are in the Back to Education Programme. He should ask for information on these schemes at the SW office where he signs on.

If he qualifies for BTEA he will keep his entitlement to rent supplement if he is in receipt of it at the time of starting the course. He can not get a grant and BTEA. Whether DCU take rent supplement or not is up to them and you would have to ask them, if they do, then you need to check if the HSE will pay rent supplement for this type of accommodation.
