Studying LC Irish (Hons) as a Mature Student

Hi everyone, I am looking for some advice. I am hoping to study primary teaching as a mature student but first of all I have to upgrade my irish qualification. One option is to enroll in a VEC nightclass and try doing the leaving cert irish in 2009 or else I could do the 2 year Dioploma sa gaeilge in NUI Maynooth. My worry is that it is so long since I did the leaving cert 1st time around (1992 - god, I feel old just writing that!) and I would I be able to complete the full course covering all the syllabus in just one year which would probably be one night a week for a couple of hours going by some of the courses I have looked at. As far as I can see the Dioploma from NUIM is taken as the equivalent of the C3 in Leaving cert irish by the Dept. of Education.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

It would be possible to do the full Irish course in one year but with a lot of work.... you'll be amazed at how much of your Gaeilge will come back. I did primary teaching diploma in 2000 having not studied Irish since Leaving Cert in 1991 (did do hons Irish at the time) and although it was initially tough all went ok. One night a week isn't a lot though so if doing that I'd recommend joining a conversation class in conradh na gaeilge to help you along, which is what a group of us did to help us along with the Gaeilge when we started our course.

agree with di74 - it is totally possible to do it in one year - if you work at it & try and find people to speak the language with, watch TG4, use every available resource etc

I sat the LC in 1993, got a D2 in Honours (should have done pass really) and then resat the honours LC Irish in 2006 (and got a B2) having not spoken a single word in the interim. I had a really great teacher thou & I think this is half the battle.
