Student doing paid work experience in the UK - company saying UK bank account necessary

My son did a few weeks' paid work experience in the UK. The work experience is directly related to his course and the UK company specifically sought candidates from his Irish university.

The work placement is now over and now the UK company is saying that my son needs an UK bank account in order for them to make the payment as, apparently, they can't make international payments!!

Any clever folk here know a pragmatic solution to this?

Hi Zobeda,

Yes he has Revolut - "having worked over there".........to clarify - he was there for 2 weeks at £500 per week. What do you mean by a sterling section exactly?

So.....
1. All he has to do is run the "Local British Pound" sort code & account number through an IBAN calculator to work out the IBAN & BIC codes
and
2. The company can then do a credit transfer to this account and it will appear in the sterling wallet of his Revolut

Have I got this right?

It's simple to generate an IBAN (and BIC) from a sort code and account number. E.g.:

Calculate an IBAN

Enter a domestic bank account and calculate the IBAN and find BIC (SWIFT). IBAN conversion with correctness guarantee.

I think the IBAN is there in the "international" tab not for the sterling tab.

Anyway, I think @ClubMan's link enables us to easily generate the IBAN & BIC.

Presumably, all this means that we have the sought-for solution - i.e. we can provide UK bank account details to enable payment.

I'd like to sincerely thank everyone who contributed to this thread for all your assistance. Much appreciated. Well done you all!
 
Having tried and failed to open a normal UK bank account for my student child, with ID and proof of residence, despite physically going into High Street banks with appointments, the issue was solved by opening either a Monzo or Revolut account. A few clicks and student sorted it themselves.

I then made euro to pound transfers to the student via Wise. Literally in seconds.

Ran into problem with university who wanted credit card transfer which I refused as that’s expensive. After persevering I got their IBAN to do the fees, and in the first year the monthly rent.
 
@JimmyB99 - Above is the sterling section of my Revolut account. He should be able to see his by swiping on his home page. As you can see the sort code, account no. and bank address are available there

If he has never bought sterling within the app before maybe this section isn't available to him yet. If that's the case tell him to exchange a small amount of euro for sterling within the app and he should be able to access it.

The different currency wallets* don’t appear until you’ve done your first currency exchange.

*I prefer to think of these as separate currency wallets or subaccounts. Your balances across all currencies are aggregated for the purpose of the €100k deposit guarantees so it is really just one single account you have with Revolut, not one for every currency.
 
Just one final question - in the helpful screenshot from @Zobeda - what does "for domestic transfer only" mean? I assume it just means "for transfers from one UK bank account to another".
 
Agree. Correct.

And assuming your son gets paid he can then exchange the sterling in his account for euro, or any other currency catered for, fee free up to whatever level applies to his account, provided he doesn't do the exchange on a weekend when fees do apply.

When you play around within the app you'll find it's so easy, and very reasonable also once you get up to speed with the terms & conditions.
