Student awarded €7,000 over ‘incessant’ landlord demands and charge for using dining table

More of the usual anti landlord public interest tripe spouted by the media. The Times is following the Indo down this road

Would it be too much to ask of our meeja professionals to have a bit of counter balance and print the odd article that shows all tenants aren't always sunshine and light

The incessant coverage of the' greedy greedy landlord bad', 'poor tenant good' articles is tiresome at this stage

And in the not too distant future when little Tristan or Isolde can't get a one bed apartment for less than €3,000 per month the meeja will hand wring and wonder where all the 'affordable' accommodation in the country is gone and what happened to choice in rental sector?

Perhaps a hard hitting article into how the RTB isn't fit for purpose should be investigated and published?

It's clear that the RTB served its purpose well in this case.

And if I were a journalist, I would certainly highlight this case as it has a lot of human interest.

I would read all the decisions too and report some of the appalling tenants.

But I doubt that landlords take many cases to the RTB?

Personally speaking I feel the RTB let the tenant down here, that fine was not enough for the abuse they suffered
I feel the fine should have been double if not tripled what was awarded against these entitled lowlifes

I feel the fine should have been double
The tenant was awarded 15k but it was changed to the lower amount on appeal. The landlords seemed to be making up their own rules as they went along. I wonder did they breach GDPR regulations by writing to the student’s university.

@fake tales thanks for misinterpreting what I said. I'll try to type slowly so you'll understand the point I am making!

The 'usual' I refer to is the constant negative stream of anti landlord articles that appear in all forms of media, both print and online daily ,not the content of this actual story.

Landlords in this country are vilified at every turn, by politicians, social commentators and journo's. The fact that they provide a much needed, every reducing service is ignored by all and sundry.

The fact that the RTB is not fit for purpose is ignored.

I am in no way condoning bad landlord behaviour. However, it would be nice, once upon a full moon to have a media outlet actually print a story that is reflective of most landlords, who provide good accommodation at a reasonable rent to people who wish to rent.

When was the last time you have seen a positive article regarding landlords. This is my point.

I have been a landlord for over 20 years, with over 6 properties and have NEVER had a falling out with a tenant because I treat them with respect (as most landlords do).

Forgive me if I don't take your advice.

Is that clear enough for you?

You mean like this...?

How many negative landlord stories appeared over the same period?

Perhaps you don't feel there is a over riding negative sentiment towards landlords in Ireland at present? I must be imagining it

Sorry Clubman, I don't feel I am imagining anything at the minute.

As a Landlord, I feel we are scapegoats for a failed political class who have mismanaged housing needs in this country since 2008 and we are easy fodder for the political opposition, social commentators and yes the 'meeja' who have consistently portrayed one side of the argument. Namely the bad greedy greedy landlord

"EVERYTHING IS WORKING AS IT SHOULD!
Full report on pages 4&6"

You never see articles about good landlords just as you never see articles about good tenants. It's simply not news.

What do you want? A headline in the Irish Times "Landlord MG Midget and Tenant Allegro have got on very well for years"? You don't go to the RTB to report a good landlord or a good tenant.

Nor do you see articles saying "Brendan drove from Cork to Dublin and stayed within the speed limit today and he was stopped by the Gardai and complimented on his driving". You might see "ClubMan was today convicted of speeding at 120kph in a 50 kph zone".

But the media does report RTB decisions - against landlord and against tenants.

But the politicians and tenants' organisations do repeatedly demonise landlords generally and advocate for stupid policies such as rent controls and other legislation which make being a small landlord unviable in this country.
