Is it necessary to engage a structural engineer when purchasing a property? We are familiar with the house as we have lived in the same estate for an number of years.
There will be no mortgage on the said property.
Thanks in advance.

Necessary, no.

A good idea ? Maybe

Firstly what do you mean by a structural engineer. A full structural report from a structural engineer would cost thousands and involve exposing foundations etc. and tell you little that you don't know already i.e. if it has been standing for a number of years it is unlikely to fall down now. If issues such as pyrite, mica, subsidence have not come to light already they probably not there.

A general engineers report on the other hand is just a report from someone with a good eye for building issues who says I have walked around and looked closely and this is what I saw. This costs a few hundred euros and in my opinion is money well spent.
