Street lighting and faulty lights - responsibility?

Not sure if correct section, but here goes:

My housing estate is approx 8 years old and many of the street lights are not working. As a result it was very dark throughout the winter and can still be late at night. There has been a few instances of car theft and break-ins and the darkness is not helping matters.

However the developer has gone bust and the County Council are saying that its not their responsibility.

So whose responsibility is it now?
 
Do you have a management company? If you do then it's probably the responsibility of the management company.
 
Our housing estate is also about 8 years old and has not yet been taken over by council but when a street light is not working I ring the local ESB office and they come out and fix it.
 
We reported our lights out in the estate to the ESB and they came out to change the bulbs.
 
I hope you have better luck than us, we spent from last September trying to get our street lights working and ESB did eventually fix four out of the five in January after my OH wrote to them and said we'd ring Joe Duffy about their refusal to fix them as they had promised several times to fix them within ten working days. As regards the unfixed one, the local council or corporation have bought the house behind where that pole is standing and the tenant they have let the house to has asked them to get the street light turned off as she couldn't sleep at night with the light shining in her bedroom window. Can you believe it ??

No, there is no management company.

Only thing is a few residents got together to organise grass cutting and keeping area clean, but nothing official.

I will contact the phone number with a list of the street lights out.
 
Try your local county council - I rang mine and they came out next day to fix it. It's an older private estate but not taken in charge of by council (KCC).

As mentioned in the OP, I have already contacted the local council and they aren't interested.

Think its because the estate is <10 years old. Think the developer is responsible for the upkeep of new estates for 10 years before hand over to CC.

It will have to be ESB route or nothing.
 
Emailed ESB Networks today after reading a post on here.

They got back very quickly and told me the email was sent on to the local ESB office to me. I got a prompt reply from them as well, but only to say that they no longer had a contract to fix the street lights in my estate.

So the question is now - who is responsible?

We do not have a management company set up by the way. What is our next port of call?
 
The ESB are not responsible for all public lights. There are whole swathes of the country where the responsibility rests with the relevant local authority and has nothing to do with the ESB.

If you wish to report a broken light that is serviced by the ESB you should first of all get the number that is on the pole (it will be about half way up and will be clearly visible) and then phone ESB Contracts at 1850372772 (8am to 8pm Mon to Fri).

They will be able to tell you if it's serviced by them or not. If not, contact the local authority for advice.
