Hi,

I want to buy a Honda Civic (second hand) but my husband won't let me because he reckons that they are always stolen.
Anybody any opinions??

I've had two Civics; I had a problem with the lock on the driver's side being tampered with on the second one, but it didn't actually give. No problems with the first. Both were parked on-the-street (in D8) most of the time (although not when the lock was tampered with), so I don't think it's inevitable that a Civic will be stolen and was never something I worried about.
Great car, cheap to run, cheap to service (really reliable), check out the cost of insurance though.
 
I drove Civics from the 1980.s until last year. I never had any problems other than when I owned a Civic Crx. The car alarm went off one night, when we went out to check it, it was sitting on blocks with one of the alloy wheels gone and the others about to go. A set of locking nuts sorted this problem. I now drive a Citroen, great car except for the recalls.....
 
civics are great cars and are popular for the theives but install a good alarm.get yourself a steering lock etc

Make sure to get a dacent [broken link removed] fitted, too... ;)
 
When people say that alot of Honda Civic's are stolen they forget to mention that the majority of these are Japanese Imports. I'll PM you the reason as I dont want to leave it on a public forum.

If you do have a Japanese Imported Honda Civic, invest in a good alarm with additional immobilizors and a big chain.

apart from that they are a fantastic car, well built, go forever and very cheap to run too.
 
I bought a 92 Civic VTI(Import) and then after getting it checked realised it was previously Stolen..Damage to the front suspension struts and incorrect brake hub size(badly replaced), and rust due to bad body repair!
 
I've had a civic for seven years and although it was broken into twice in dodgy areas, it's never given me a bit of trouble apart from that.

I put the fact that it hasn't been stolen down to the fact that it's a sickly mint blue/green.

Better than any car alarm, no self-respecting joyrider would be seen dead in it
 
My wife's 98 Civic had an attempt a few months back, they broke drivers window & wrecked door lock - no other damage and no other repeats since - RonanC,I'm not sure if it's a japanese import, not suped up / modified or anything. WOuld you PM me with the reason? Thanks - Quinno

Japanese imports are not always "suped up". UK/Irish models are too ;)

I understand you are talking about civics but the same could said about old nissan micra's getting stolen. i.e pre 1993. When i had one it was broken into twice but they gave up after the saw the chain. When i sold the car to my sister it was taken within three weeks, never to be seen again.

I am betting it is the same reason they go for civics
 
Honda civics are renowned for their reliability no matter what. Great to drive and own. I've had two...the older 93 body and the 98 body. I loved my 93 VSI but it got nicked about 3 times. The older cars locks are primitive and an easy target for thieves. Insurance can be dear too.
 
Down these parts, civics receive alot of unwelcome attention from the Gardai. They always seem to be stopping young lads driving civics. I heard that the Gardai associate them with people engaged with nafarious activities.
 
If a thief wants it, they will get it, had a Scudo broke into and a heavy generator and other tools approx 2g worth taken in cloverhill car park some time back and the only damage was lock cover was missing, mate had his vw transporter broken into, they punched a hole beside door handle and opened locks and cleaned it out, and another transit van they knew where a cable for Central locking travels and put in something and chopped the cable and all doors opened. They know how to break into anything they want, Imagine the prison car park in middle of the day!

Sounds like they are no more likely to be broken into than any other car (except for the imports maybe). And I would definitely be using a steering wheel lock which I think is a great deterrent.
How come insurance is so much more expensive on them too. Anything to do with their reputation?

It's more to do with their reputation as a 'boy racer' car AFAIK, but I'm not sure if that's warranted anymore, i.e. I've seen plenty of souped up older models, but not so many/no newer ones.
 
have a 05 civic 1.6 se 4 door, and have previously had 4 door civic. will run 4 ever. insurance on civic higher than larger engine and more expensive accord. the boy racer tag is a real pain in the ... if you plan to own the car for 3+ years and do lot of mileage, they are hard to beat.

I wouldn't imagine that there are too many car thiefs lurking on this particular board that are unaware as to why imported Japanese civics are stolen (they are probably out "joyriding").

Go on, tell us. I'm interested.
