Starting own business

Hi

My brother is starting his own business. He seems to be quite well organised in terms of his product and market research etc. The only grey area from what I can see, is how to approach customers, putting a marketing strategy together etc

Does anyone have any similar experience or knowledge about how one man bands on a small budget generally get the word out? I know that it'll depend on the business etc but some examples or advice would help.

hi ann

well check out how the competitors get their info out is it websites? trade mags? newspapers ? door drop
s? depends on the sort of business

Hi ann,
is it possible to say what business it is? for instance my husband is planning to open a bookshop so part of the publicity would be inviting book reviewers and those types to the launch, this of course may not be at all relevant to this business.

It's along the lines of specialist corporate consultancy, I don't have a good understanding of exactly what it is to be honest but there seems to be a market.

The first step is obviously for him to figure what kind of companies he is aiming at, but then, what are his tactics for reaching them. I doubt if many one man bands have money for advertising in magazines etc. and I'm thinking that networking will be his main thing. I guess that means going along to events. Anything else he can do?

Just looking for thoughts from others who have been in this kind of scenario.

FÁS have a ten week course on starting your own business. Im not sure if it'd be any good but Im sure you'd pick up some useful tips.

He's already done the course .. I think the marketing bit was quite good but doesn't seemed to have addressed the range practical tactics about how to approach your market.

Find one company that needs his services, and get a testimonial, find the next one and get a testimonial, use that as he builds himself up.

As scatter gun approach without reference to companies how have never heard of him or his services isnt going to gain much.

Website and golden pages listing would help too

what about contacting someone who's already in his line of business and asking for advice? someone from the other end of the country who wouldn't see him as competition?
