According to this article in the Irish Times

Start-ups surpass 20,000 for first time in almost 20 years

20,977 new companies were registered in 2016.

How many of these are actual start-ups? I would have thought that most start-ups would be sole traders.

Most of the following are some forms or re-organization and not really start-ups:

Professional services: 4,079
Finance sector: 2,959
Construction: 1,876

Agreed. The widespread use of SPVs and propensity to hold property via corporates are influencing the figures.
