Hi

I was wondering if someone could advise me on the following. I will be looking to purchase a house later this year with my girlfriend and I have a question relating to the stamp duty. Our situation is as follows

I will be a first time buyer but my girlfriend already partially owns a place with another person.

If we purchase the house together will be obliged to pay stamp duty in full or what happens.

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Sorry if a thread already exists for this.

Hi ShaneC,

I can answer your question as I am in the same situation as yourself and find it very frustrating!

You will have to pay stamp duty as your gf is not a first time buyer for stamp duty purposes. She can still claim mortgage interest relief for the 7 years allowed and you can also claim interest relief from the date ye buy your house.

We are struggling to save a deposit + stamp duty as my bf is paying half of a mortgage on a house that he cannot sell or rent for reasons I won't get into here.

Good luck with it all!!

Full stamp duty payable unless she inherited the property she already partly owns.

Hi All,

Thanks for the prompt replies.... Guess we'll just have to take the hit.

Thanks again
