Squeeky Stairs

My two bottom stairs squeek when you step on them and am wondering if there's a way to remove the noise. Any ideas? Thanks.

We had the same problem, but it happened on every step. It turned out after having it bolted to the wall for a time, we eventually had to put in a new stairs. It also came to light when the old stairs was removed, that the builder had installed the stairs the wrong way around, so it was pulling away every time it was walked on. We think that the carpet held it together. This stairs had held up for over 30 years. Can you see the back of your stairs, it may be the same thing.

It doesn't look like the same thing. We've just looked at it and looks pretty normal to us. Very annoying noise though.

yup.have the same problem.14 steps.10 creek and wake kids in the morning.very frustrating.house is 18 yrs old.

I read once that putting talcum powder where the squeak is coming from stops it - haven't a clue if it works...

Could be a nail that's no longer holding the wood in place, with the result that the wood is rubbing against the nail - take up the carpet and test if any of the steps are slightly 'springy' and if so, put in some screws beside the nails.

Another thing is to get under the stairs and put a triangular-shaped piece of wood in the right angle where the riser meets the tread - I've seen it in DIY books. No doubt some of the more handy bods around here will be able to explain it better!
