spray foam insulation for noise?

Hi,
Have a problem with noise from next door which leads me to think insulation is very poor in the house.
A joiner (friend of family) I was talking to suggested something like spray foam insulation where you drill some holes in the wall, spray in the foam, it expands and insualtes. I had mentioned building the stud wall and filling the gap but he said this was pretty big job and all the walls coming off the party wall would prob have to be done too. Has anyone any experiences, opinions?

Hi Laine, Ive been making enquiries about the very same thing and coming up against a brick wall, no company I have asked will do foam insulation for interior walls and for noise insulation. Yet a pal says he recalls his dad (who used to work in construction) talking about being able to get this done, in the past.

I would be very interested to see if you get any replies to your question as I would love to do this. I have checked out costs of sound proofing and trying to get it done and I am also not keen on having to get stud walls built against all parti-walls.

How about running your query by www.sei.ie They will get one of their advisors to ring you back and speak to you about your problem and give advice.

Sueellen, I rang them before and found the woman I spoke to very unhelpful, said she would get someone to ring me back and never did. I rang again, same woman and she was almost rude this time. I will try again but I was very put off by both their site (very little information) and noone returning my calls.

When I called them a guy rang me back in about 2 or 3 days.

You should complain that this is your 3rd time to call and you are very disappointed as friends have not had the same problem.

Give Shannon Insulation a ring (no connection) but they just did a great job on my house. They've been in business along time so they know their stuff.
They have a number of different products depending on the application.

Google them and see what they can do for you!!!

Had a look and they look v professional. Wondering would it decrease the heat/energy lost much more than doing anything for noise reduction?
Any idea on prices to expect, standard 3 bed semi detached.
Many thanks

I would estimate about 1500 to pump the cavities and about the same to spray foam between the rafters so total of about 3k. I would definetly suggest you go for it as you will have a twofold benefit in sound proofing and massive savings in heating

one thing you might want too find out ,is that with alot of semi d houses the dividing wall between the 2 houses is built with a block on the flat, so it has no cavity and if so you would not be able to pump it with insulation.

Thanks very much for your reply. Just wondering how would you find out what the wall was like? If it's just a flat block, what would be the options then? I'm not very good at imagining the inside of our wall!

Go up into the attic and you will be able to see the exposed blockwork. If they're about 4" high and 16" to 18" wide then they are 4" blocks on their side as jab1 says (our house is like this).

Some houses will have plasterboard slabs held on with blobs of plaster on the wall and you could inject expanding foam behind them. Others will have the will just plain plastered, in which case you would have to get the walls slabbed.

Some timberframe houses seem to have nothing more than a stud wall between them.

How old is the house?

noise insulation is not comparable to heat loss insulation in this situation and a solution that solves one may not necessarily solve the other

in party walls where the other house is occupied and heated - heat loss is generally not a major issue therefore there is unlikely to be any detail to reduce heat loss eg cavity wall or insulation

if it is a major headache get specialist advice but the before and after results would need to be measured to be proved to be working IMHO that will be difficult to do

studding out the wall and inserting sound proofing is an option but on a party wall with switches and sockets, chimney breast etc it is by no means straightforward

Looks like it's a trip to the attic for me! Will i be able to see a cavity if the party wall has a cavity between it? Sorry I am totally stupid about these things.

Spray on foam cannot be sprayed via a hole into a cavity, bonded bead is the only material that will spread properly.
If the party wall is block, it should be plastered with sand and cement for sound proofing, this is a building Reg. There is an estate in Ardee that the developer had go back and strip plasterboard and plaster the party walls.

The spray foam is also a excellent air tight barrier, timberframe or block you need to strip the plasterboard to apply properly, www.econstructionproducts.ie

Does that mean that if we don't want to strip the walls and insulate from there our only other option is to use this bonded bead which has can insert through the wall by drilling. Any idea on cost of this?

I would not recommend the bonded bead as a sound barrier, I do'nt know of a material that can be sprayed via a drilled hole to act as a sound barrier.

Has anyone built a stud wall to try and combat next door neighbour noise. I don't mind giving up the extra inches if it worked.
Is this a costly procedure and is it a huge job?
Also we have some walls coming off the party wall that we would be building the stud wall against, would these have to have stud walls built against these too or is it enough to do the main wall that runs through the house (the party wall that joins us with next door)
