If the spouse of a retiree is working full time at the time of retirement, is the other person eligible to receive the state pension?

Is there any rule that requires the retiree to wait till the spouse also to retire?

If you mean the Old Age Contributory Pension then that's based on the retiree's PRSI contribution record.

If you mean the Old Age Non-contributory Pension then that's means tested and the spouse's income will be considered as part of this test.

No, but the spouse's earnings may impact the non-contributory pension means test if applicable.

If you are referring to the contributory pension.

You are entitled to your contributory state pension at age 66, if you meet the Prsi contribution rules. There is no means test so your partner can be employed.

You can also remain in employment and quality for your pension.

The only thing you will lose out on is the household benefits package. If your spouse is living in the same house as you, you will not get the HBP until either your spouse starts their contributory pension or you reach age 70.
