Key Post Some tips when hiring a car

On many occasions I have been offered a better car, because all the economy models were rented out. I have never been asked for extra payment.
Happens to me quite often too, but if they offer me a too large car I've declined it. Also I don't want automatics, which I've been offered as well.

A minibus would have driven me over the edge. Especially if it was on the way up Alpes d'Huez.

I booked a rental through Ryanair Cars as someone suggested on this or a related thread. I was quite surprised that the prices were indeed cheaper - in the case of my larger car rental about half of the price the rental company offered on their own site.

You’re thinking of renting a car in a few months time.
1. Look for a quotation now for the dates you have in mind. Pay nothing, you’ve just submitted an interest in renting. You’ve bought nothing yet.
2. The nearer you get to the required rental date the companies (don’t choose just one) will offer discounts almost every month you are waiting.
3. About six days before you arrive book what is best for you.
4. Buy the excess insurance in Ireland before you travel.

Don't you have to have the excess insurance in place before booking the vehicle in order for it to be effective? So these two steps should probably be reversed?

I do book in advance and review regularly the month before. I generally pay as I am using broker websites. However it's free to cancel up to 48 hours in advance. I find that price do generally reduce, particularly between one to 2 weeks before the pick up.
I only use the usual big companies and their associated companies.
As a basic rule, yes put the flight number as the car is kept only for an hour. Check the opening times as if your flight is delayed a lot, there is a good chance that the agency will be closed on arrival.

No, why would you have to. It's to cover the damages or theft during the rental. It's generally sold by the rental companies at the pick up counter

Same reason you can't, for example, take out travel insurance to cover a trip that has already been booked and the insurance needs to be in place before booking the trip?

I would expect that the following is a general condition of most or all car hire excess insurance policies:
Can I purchase a Car Hire Excess policy if my rental has already started?

No, you must purchase the Car Hire Excess policy before you have signed the rental agreement.

The rental starts at the pick up. The rental contract/rental agreement is signed at the pick up. Generally, when the rental company sells you the super cdw and the super tp, it's at the counter. Before that, it's just a booking.

No idea what cdw and tp are but I'm talking about taking a car hire excess insurance policy out separate from the car hire itself as that's often more cost effective. Especially if it's an annual policy and you hire a car several times a year. In that case the excess policy needs to be in place before the car is actually hired as far as I know.

Before the car is taken, before the rental agreement is signed, not before the booking of the car (as it's clearly written: before you have signed the rental agreement). Cdw: collision damage waiver/tp theft protection

So this order is perfectly fine. The insurance is in place before the trip and before the rental agreement is signed at the counter.
The booking is not the signing of the rental agreement. You don't sign anything when you book online, but you do when you collect the car. At that point, you are explained the covered included and offered additional excess insurance.

Years ago we used to hire from Orlando car hire in gran canaria. They were cheap because outside the airport and the cars were old and a bit knocked about. Loved them, always picked you up promptly from the airport and ditto dropped you back. No hard sell on insurance, never a glance at the car after. Getting it back was enough, loved the casualness of it all.
For some reason the next time in gran canaria we hired from some other crowd who were up to every trick in the book. They were IN the airport but such was the amount of aggro going on at the desk that it took forever dropping the car back.
Nowadays we just get the bus.

Looking at the T&Cs for a few hire companies, the policy coverage must start prior to collecting the car. You don't need cover between reserving the car and picking it up. Unlike a travel insurance policy where you might need to claim for a cancellation due to illness or some other insurable event in advance of travel, a car hire excess policy just needs to be effective from before you collect the car to after you drop it off.
