Solid Oak Floor laid on Elastilon - any views?

We have a solid oak floor laid on Elastilon and it is extremely noisy - ie creaking and cracking with every step taken. It is also very bouncy in spots. The hall is particulary bad all over but the sitting room is also creaking a bit and worse in some spots than others. It's down about 4 months and just seems to be getting worse (or maybe we're just getting more fed up with it:)). Had the fitter out and they are going to lift and relay. They say that there should have been a levelling compound poured first to ensure the floor was level. My questions are:

1. How long does the levelling compound have to dry for? They say they want to come in, lift the floor, pour the levelling compound and come back the next day to lay new floor. Is this enough time to let it dry?

2. They are relaying on Elastilon. I am concerned that the creaking problem will not be solved... Is this a problem with laying on Elastilon?

I would love to hear from others who have laid their floors with this method. Six months/a year down the line, are you still happy with it? Does it creak/crack?

Put Elastilon into the search facility and you'll locate a few previous threads with reports from people who have used this product.

Hi,

I have it laid and it maintains an excellient grip, the bounce and squuking was caused by the uneven subfloor and elastilon will not resolve that. Its a laying system and as with any method of laying wooden floor you require a level subfloor to avoid issues. My subfloors was out 20mm over 1mm. it actually has a downward slope. To level it would have been a huge job involving ripping out a new bathroom etc so i live with hte ood squeek and bounce.

Thanks. I did this but I was also interested in hearing how people have got on with it after a while.

I have had Elastilon Basic laid under both solid oak and solid maple.
I have had no issues with creaking boards and they are down 4.5 years now.
With respect to the creaking boards, a friend of mine brushed talcum powder in the joints over a period of time and it appears to have had the desired effect.

I am very happy with my floors and would use elastilon again but hopefully this house is for life so...

Thanks for that. Just didn't want to go through all the hassle of getting the floor lifted and relaid and then have the same problems! Hopefully all will be ok this time!

thinking of getting the same done dfo3 - is it costing much?

We got solid oak (18mm x 150mm) in hall and sitting room (approx 40 sq yards) and laminate in playroom (16 sq yds). To take up existing carpet, remove skirtings, supply and lay floors, shave doors, fit new skirtings cost us €4,200.
