Solicitors Fees Upfront?

I require the services of a solicitor for a court date I have coming up, I approached a solicitors firm and they have asked for the fees up front before the court date..

Just curious, Is this normal?

No they havent represented me before, so probably makes sense especially in the current economic climate.. Just thought I'd check anyway..

But shop around to make sure they're not over-charging you!
