Solicitor is charging me €500 + VAT to give me a copy of my file.

Thanks all. Yes I did ask why it was so expensive for the file to be transferred to USB and was there a cheaper option. That was a week ago, never got a response. But thank you all, and going to follow up with the Law Society

Was this a file where you and your ex jointly retained a solicitor to handle a property sale? And is that the file which you now wish to have a copy of?

Checking through a file before passing it on is, hopefully, a regular and normal part of the process. No person or system is 100% foolproof and error proof. I would like to think that my solicitor did such checks in case they accidentally included a document relating to me in someone else’s files!

So you’d expect a charge. Junior staffer to put it together and more senior to check it. Maybe a couple of hours work, depending on the volume of documents and how good their document management system is. A bit more if it’s a practice with a lot more paper and fewer scanned documents.
Ask for a breakdown and offer half? Negotiate

Finding and correcting errors is going to be built into any office system. It’s part of the overheads. Everyone gets billed, albeit indirectly
