Solicitor fees , initial meeting

I’m considering engaging a solicitor for a civil matter. Have never done this before.
The asking fee for the initial meeting is c.€500 plus vat.
Is this the going rate? Seems a little excessive to me .

Not in my experience. Shop around.

The solicitor may not be at all interested in the case, but rather than say so, they throw out an extravagant quote knowing it will be rejected.

Maybe give some idea of the issue here (without any identifying information) and you might get good (free) advice on how to move forward.

I paid 350+VAT 3 years ago for similar initial consult. Got good advice from it though and has provided some documentation in advance which had been reviewed

TBF it could depend in the area of law also and how specialised it is

The two solicitors that I consulted with over the years did the initial consultation for free.

it depends on what the issue is. Sometimes it’s annoying when a prospective client wants to have an initial consultation for free but you know you will solve their problem in it.
