solicitor failed to check for debts owing

Hello,

I bought an apartment in the Algarve in 2006 and later discovered that the previous owner did not pay all his condominium charges. My own solicitor had the job of seeing the sale through from start to finish and failed to receive written confirmation from the condominium management that bills had been settled. Now I have apparently been made responsible to pay these several thousand Euros because I received a registered letter too late (the fault of the person who without my consent picked up this letter and gave it much later to me) and did not make a response. Apparently one has 20 days in which to respond and that was in November last year.

Does someone have a suggestion other than make a formal complaint to my own lawyer and to the bar of lawyers. I cannot believe that there is no call to appeal. My lawyer says "You have to pay, or they will auction your property in order to pay this bill".
