Social Democrats TD Eoin Hayes apologises for Barack Obama Halloween costume

Recently readmitted to the SDs? Cultural misappropriation is up there with war crimes for these people.

I predict much handwringing, sobbing, public flagellation and internal investigations to follow.

Imagine the first week in government of an alliance of the left. It would be endless resignations and apologies. Would probably collapse within a month.

"The incident took place while Mr Hayes was president of the Students’ Union in University College Cork some 16 years ago."

And 15 years ago Saint Holly the Sanctimonious was tweeting that Pope Francis was the leader of a paedophile ring;

adding: "For every minute of air time taken up on the papal conclave I'm gonna get an abortion".

(Needless to add she has since deleted her infantile posts and apologised "sincerely" for them. )

This has to be the most ridiculous, pathetic, silly-season non-story we've seen in a while. I've little time for the sanctimonious, woke Soc Dems at the best of times but Hayes' earnest almost tearful apology is beyond cringe-worthy.

What should now happen is - all of those who were "hurt" or "offended" by his juvenile antics 16 years ago should come forward and we can set up a survivors support group - with free counselling paid from the sale of those shares.

(My favorite comment on Twitter/X about this was, "when they're not painting their nails, they're painting their faces." (A reference to a Dun Laoghaire Soc Dem TD who informed the gathered media on the steps of Leinster House that she would continue to paint her nails in the Palestinian colours.")

I'm mortified for them...and some of the media reporting on this should know better.

It's an embarrassment for sure.

I heard some lady on RTE talking about this and telling us how we should speak when we meet a black person and ask them where they are from? If the response is "I'm from Navan", do not follow-up with "where are you really from?"

Seriously, the woman spoke with a strong African accent. Not a Navan accent!

Its not the colour of the persons skin, its the accent. Its always the accent.

If today's press coverage is anything to go by, poor Eoin Hayes looks like he'll be in the naughty corner for a while to come. Sackcloth and ashes wouldn't even cut it for him at this stage. Wouldn't blame him if he said, "sod this socialism lark, I'm going back to making proper money again."
