Small animals on buses

According to lunchtime live the prospect of small animals IS going to happen on buses.
Mind you , no one that spoke about this had even heard this. Andrea Gilligan said that this IS going to happen. I didn't hear where she got this information from .Some people who spoke about this were very opposed, and rightly so , but others thought it was a good idea
No driver spoke about it , perhaps they hadn't heard it either.....Just imagine this rubbish ...

Well thats the first i heard about a consultation, i travel by train frequently and didnt see any posters about it in my local station either. This country has gone to the dogs , litterally.

If you wish to participate in future NTA consultations you should follow their social media accounts or keep an eye on the TFI https://www.transportforireland.ie/news/nta-opens-public-consultation-on-policy-for-pets-on-public-transport/ (site) where all such consultations are announced.

Here we go again pandering to a small voiciferous minority and to hell with the majority. I say this and have two dogs, but such is my almost nil faith in other dog owners where I don’t see them cleaning up dog poo or bringing loaded did poo bags to proper disposal. Then we will have the on-bus debates on what is a small dog. When will we ever learn?

I have the TFI app, nothing on it.
Should I have been searching the website every week to see a list of changes that may affect me ? Another undercover survey based on which public policy is then forced on people.

If you're interested in voicing your opinion and having it count, then follow their social media or set up a news alert on their website. It's not difficult, they've received more than 50k submissions on some topics, so clearly plenty of people are aware of these.

This particular one only received 2.5k submissions, so doesn't look like a topic the public at large have strong feelings about.

Perhaps her ratings were down a little. But she seemed very sure about it happening. I cannot see it ever happening, personally and hope it never does...

Or knew about. Why not have a radio advert and posters at bus and train stations ?

Because people would be on here and elsewhere complaining about the waste of spending millions a year on advertising when they were already getting 10s of thousands to participate at little or no cost.

But they didnt get 10s of thousands and that smacks of an undercover agenda.
That they have in the past while using the same means of advertising suggests. as i said above, that the public at large don't have a strong opinion either on this one.

What kind of undercover agenda would you suggest? Have PETA taken over? Or worse still, the animals themselves? Seriously, there is zero financial incentive here, no NTA exec in line for a bonus for increasing revenue. In fact there may be increased cleaning costs. But lots of people need to bring pets to the vet or want to bring them to visit friends. Animal advocacy and welfare groups have been campaigning for some time for this measure.

Lots of people have a fear of dogs. Lots of people dont want to sit on a seat where a dog sat. Lots of people who walk dogs dont clean up after them.
Having an animal as a pet is a life choice which needs to be thought about carefully including how to get it to a vet.
I like dogs, was born and raised with them but they lived outside.
There are enough issues on public transport as it is. Anti social behaviour, people who sit on your booked seat and wont move, vaping, loud noise.
Why introduce another contentious issue ?

And just imagine , on a wet day .....the smell . Who would end up cleaning up after them ...like was said earlier, people, not all, won't do that outside

I see small dogs being carried on the Luas for quite some time now with no problems. Also see plenty of guide dogs/assistance dogs who don't cause problems either. I have yet to see one going to the toilet on the tram or sitting on seats. IMHO humans cause more problems on the Luas/buses than dogs do. I think its a great idea.

It's some of the humans bringing animals on bus, tram etc that I would be more worried about.
Even though it has been allowed up to now and was fine , it was never highlighted according to the people who rang in today , given that it was only five or six . I had never been aware of it ...

No issue with that. Both the dog and owner are trained and dont have the egos of many other dog owners. I walk a public park most days. Signs to keep dogs on a lead which are ignored by many including a woman with a German Shepherd with no muzzle who says "he won't touch you" as he runs around.

Lots of people have a fear of dogs.
People have fears about lots of things, part of any reasonable society is accepting that policy will never suit everyone, but should accommodate the wishes of the majority.

Lots of people dont want to sit on a seat where a dog sat.
They wouldn't be allowed on seats, just as it it today with service animals and the small pets that are being allowed on at driver discretion.

I'd argue all of the above are and will remain far more significant concerns than a few people choosing to bring a small dog on a trip to the vet.

Some of those getting excited about this seem to expect public transport all of a sudden being overrun with people who all of a sudden decide to bring their pets to work, or into town for a night out. In reality I'd say numbers won't increase all that much from what they are today.
