Skype

A friend of mine has been using it for about 6 weeks now and he's extremely happy with it. He uses it over a wireless broadband connection (www.irishbroadband.ie) so doesn't even need an Eircom phoneline, saving another €25 (robbing ba.....s) a month. Anybody calling him can ring the mobile. I'm not sure how well it works over a modem line, haven't tried it yet.

Just on since Monday - very happy with it, free phone calls to other Skype users and 1.7 cent per minute to worldwide destinations - how bad ?

Get yourself a headset (you can use your speakers) and microphone and download the free software and away you go...

Have used it a few times from home and we are planning on introducing it in work as soon as we get people to let go of the handset and accept a headset as a normal way to talk on the phone.

The 1.7c rate (ex-11% VAT) is not fully worldwide - but it does cover the usual near-Eurpoean conutries, some of Asia, US, Canada, NZ, AUS, etc . . . other rates vary.

Just watch out for some of their non-landline rates even in the UK. Judicious use of their rate chart before calling would be a good idea.

Ive gone the same way as others here. Got in NTL broadband, got rid of the landline and make calls from mobile. Have talked with a mate with skype in australia with crystal clear reception but havent created an account yet.

Zag, Ive read some comments on blogs across the web and it seems that there are pros and cons in using skype in a bus. environment. Ive found..
Pros are
1. cheap or free calls,
2. conferencing ability, (which Ive used and had very good reception).

The cons are
1. trying to get the other users to use skype,
2. the speed of their internet connection,
3. the handset they have, as Im sure you know you can get a handset from skype for 50e but if the other user doesnt have a handset they might baulk at shouting at a pc
4. Reception limited to certain countries and then not clear in all of those.
5. the points max highlighted (although Ive only seen him quote those)

For the time being Id use it only in a home environment, but if you want to take a chance in work, why not..

Meanwhile, heres an interesting developments with skype..
