Should I opt out this time round

A colleague wants to push for a new position to be created for our department. First of all we would have to put pressure on Management to bring in this new position. The last time something like this took place I came out badly out of it. A person outside of my workplace that I thought was my friend encouraged me to do all the negotiations with management and when the position became available she changed jobs so that she would be eligible to apply for the position. This person was more senior to me in years and experience and position and I looked on her as a mentor. I was so taken aback by her competing with me for the position that she was encouraging me to go for. I did really badly at the interview as a result. I don’t think I would make the grade at the interview

My interview skills are a bit weak have never really been good and would have difficulty selling myself. I have never gotten a complaint about my work and think that people are very pleased with my work. I am not earning a fortune but I can live within my means. Should I opt out of the process this time round?

Is it the interview itself that has you worried or the fact that you have to put pressure on Management to create a position?

If there is a new position and it is something you are interested in, then I would go for it. Look at it as an opportunity - if you get the job great, if not, you've had the experience of the interview. The interview alone will help you practise your interview techniques. Putting yourself forward can also demonstrate to management that you are interested in progressing within the company which I think is a positive.

If you feel your interview skills are weak, do some prep work and practise. Ask a family member/ friend to act as interviewer and quiz you on some interview questions. Good luck!

Thank you for your replies.
I succeeded in creating a position in the past, but that was a very painful lesson. I had what I thought was a very good friend and mentor. This particular mentor switched jobs so that she could apply for the job herself and got it. I was gutted about this.

In the mean time I was thinking of approaching the boss on my own to ask for a raise or an acting up position. I am already doing the work for this "new position". I am trying to gather some tips at the moment to make the best shot I can at asking for an acting up capacity. Basically what this new hot shot wants is to do my job for more money.

Well then let your colleague push for the new position. Take a back seat to the "pushing" and if the new position is created then it will be opened to all to apply presumably. Why do you think you have to be a the forefront of this push to get the new position.

I dont understand why you have to opt out or in, dont get involved. If asked your opinion you could support it and then apply if the position is opened.

If you are qualified for it get some help on your interview skills and give it a shot. Good luck.

Thanks for the suggestions.
I have been thinking and yes what ye say is true I don't really have to take part in asking Management for the post. The new kid has invited us all to be part of this initive. Yes I could let the post be created and then apply.
But I think they're may also be another route available to me. I have been doing this job for nearly 9 years. I am doing the work that is required but this isn't reflected in the job title or the salary. I am going to ask for an acting up position and that way hopefully avoid the interview. I have requested a meeting with my boss. I have my achievements on paper and what I bring to the table.

I know my limitations and interviews are never my strong point. I have studied for interviews in the past and I have done an interview skills course. Whereas they're are two if not three contenders that would just be very good at interviews. I think I would be wise to try and avoid the interview if possible. Competition is very keen

Thanks very much the feed back is very useful

Your 'friend' or the colleague?

The collegue. She knows she has a good chance of getting it. My "friend" has already got the origional post I pushed for and so would have nothing to gain from this new initive

She has sent around a group email to ask for a meeting to discuss it. At first I didn't know what to do. But now I am going to try for an acting up position - I am doing the work in question anyway but this isn't reflected in my title or salary. I don't know whether its wise to let her know this or not.
