Hi

Septic tank in place that should have been puraflo unti/bord na mona etc.

Is there some mechanism that can be dropped into the tank to change it to puraflo etc?

Recommendations for companies, how much etc?

I built in 2009 and put down a concrete septic tank and a good percolation area - should I have used a puraflo system?

As can be seen from the diagram the puraflo system goes in after the septic tank (not instead of the septic tank). Its purpose is to treat the liquid effluent after it comes out of the septic tank. If you have good percolation there there is no need for a puraflo system.

Stage One: Primary Settlement - Physical Treatment
1. The wastewater from the house flows into the septic tank.
2. Initial settlement occurs.
3. The gross solids sink to form a sludge layer at bottom of the tank.
4. The liquid effluent flows by gravity into the pump chamber.

Stage Two: Puraflo Biofiltration - Secondary Treatment
5. The liquid effluent is pumped to the Puraflo modules.
6. A pipework system at top level in the modules evenly distributes the effluent onto a naturally occurring filter media.
7. A combination of biological, chemical and physical processes treat the effluent as it filters through the media in the modules.
8. The treated effluent emerges from the modules through the outlet pipework for an approved disposal method.

Puraflo is one of a number of competing systems that essentially do the same thing but with differing technologies.

Bord na Mona seem to be in the process of Changing their name to Anua.

Check what your planning permission says.
As previous poster says Puraflow pumps the effluent from a septic tank to an elevated box of peat from which the cleaned effluent can percolate away.
If your planning permission says other than a septic tank and percolation area this will arise if you sell in the future.

If you used the BNM engineer to report on the site and submitted that as part of your planning it is very likely that your planning specifically states the Puraflo system.

You just need to fit a new small tank beside your septic tank and the puraflo modules beside the percolation area. You should just email BNM looking for a quote (between 3000 and 4000) and all you have to do is supply the JCB on the day of install.

Thanks a mil for replies. Ran out of money so didnt install it at end of build... in hindsight should have just found it somewhere.

Now worried about this septic tank bill. It was stipulated in our conditions. Cheers.
