Soon I will be earning in another country getting paid in sterling. My question is what is the most efficient way of sending sterling back to my Irish BoI and CU accounts?

In the past I was able to send home cheques from my personal bank account in sterling to be lodged in my personal account in ireland. I got charged nothing extra and the sterling was converted to euro at the commercial exchange rate available on the day. Is this still the case?

It's never converted at the commercial rate of day unless you mean commercial rate = whatever the bank decide to charge

Wouldn't have thought a cheque was a good idea. Bank transfer is cheaper, if you convert the sterling into Euro in the country you reside in it might be cheaper. As a first step you you should ask the bank in the country you reside in and the bank in Ireland in case there are charges both ways.
