Self build insurance required?

We are building an extension.

The builder has shown us his insurance which covers public liability, product liability and employers liability.

Do we need to inform our insurance company of the build and do we have to take out a self build policy ?

Further to this I contacted my insurance company who are restricting cover during the build to fire, flood and storm cover.

So just wondering now do I require any other insurance?

When I did an extension couple of years ago yes I informed my insurance company as I knew I had to and knew as well they would greatly reduce the cover I had while the works were in place. If you are using just the one contractor then their insurance should cover the works, only if it was direct labour and you were the boss as such and hiring all the trades would you need self build insurance. That said I'm not never heard of it being used for extensions, it's usually new builds and you have to apply for it before the work starts. My house insurer actually required a copy of my builders policy to be sent to them beforehand.

Are you moving out of the house during the building ?
Is the builder fencing and locking the site for the works ?

If so then your home is a building site and anybody without a safe pass is not allowed to enter.

The builder should be responsible for everything on the site.
Check exactly what his insurance includes.

Does it cover theft of anything from the site ?

Only moving out of the house for 4 to 6 weeks. The extension is at the rear of a semi detached house with access from the side. Site won't be closed up at the front accept while out for 4 to 6 weeks. Have only seen building insurance that states public, product and employer's liability.
