seagate external drive problem

I have a seagate external drive. When I plug it in a green light comes on but it makes a beeping noise for about 5 minutes. Then the noise stops. However the computer does not recognise the device and I cannot find it anywhere. Need stuff off the drive so any help appreciated.

I bought one of those at Easons and had similar problem.
Fortunately I had only got started dumping stuff into it.
Easons gave me a full refund. I know this doesn't help your particular problem but just sharing my experience with Seagate

Yes - I'd similar trouble - eventually I dismantled the unit (it was 3 yrs old) and installed its hard-disk as an internal drive in my PC so as to get at my data.
