Revenue DD - Amount taken different to receipt

I have an unusual one and it's not something that would happen on my watch, but I didn't have oversight of this particular account.

My husband and I have a rental property and I have done the tax returns for us separately over the years (separate as my husband was non tax resident). The tax returns have always been done and payments made on time. When NLWT came in, in 2023, he paid his tax monthly via DD and therefore there was no requirement for any large annual payments as he had always overpaid tax due via NLWT.

He has just noticed that in November 2023, revenue took a payment for over 9k, while the receipt issued 2 days later for 1.6k. According to the tax return and the receipt, 1.6k is all that was accounted for.

I have checked through his Revenue Record on ROS and on the 'payments' tab ' charges & payments' etc and I can't find anything that would account for the extra 7k+. I have issued a request for review via 'myenquiries' on his account, but the response time is currently 10-24 working days (somewhat understandable considering the time of year), and I'm just wondering if there is anything else I can check, while I am waiting for their response.

There was also no disposals for CGT, or gifts/inheritances subject to CGT/CAT.

I hope this is not deleted as off topic. It's not worth stsrting new Revenue DD thread for it.

I had a different DD experience with Revenue.
For tax year 2024 I was due a refund, and got it. Prelim tax for 2025 was also paid. A week or so later, I received two identical letters from Revenue saying a payment for €X was returned unpaid by my bank. One letter referred to 2024, the other for 2025, however, the same sum of money was in both.

I do not know why the payments failed. There was easily enough money in the account. No other DD have failed. I must ask my bank about this.

I contacted Revenue by phone. They explained the refund amount was processed before my return had been finalised.
It seems strange to refund before the process of finalising a return is complete, and also aggregating both sums together.

The failed payments were two sums, adding up to the total shown on each letter. Should the letters not advise the amount for 2024, and 2025? ie. I don't owe say €1,775 for each year, it's €775 for 2024, and €1,000 for 2025 (prelim tax).

Thanks all, I did get some initial responses from Revenue but they have requested more information on the account it was debited to, which we have not been able to get online as the transaction is over 2 years old, so my husband needs to go to the bank to check it out and with Christmas closure and is being away, he hasn't been able to get to a branch yet. They don't seem to have any more information than us.

Clubman/Millie, the payment due for 2022 including preliminary tax for 2023 (preliminary for 2022 had been paid the previous year) was approximately 1.6k. Hopefully we can get further along next week and I will update.

Luternau, the only thing I can think of in your situation is that one year I put the preliminary tax payment amount in the current year instead of the preliminary tax section - could it be something like that?

Just to update, my husband went to the bank to check out the transaction and it seems the actual amount taken, is different to the amount shown on the online banking summary. The bank teller gave the the correct amount of 1.6k taken on the day, and said that the amount of over 9k appeared to be a total of all Revenue transactions up to that date. So sadly, no large refund to come back in this case.

Clubman, we couldn't see the transaction on a statement or online as it was over 2 years old and the statements hadn't been downloaded. My husband had searched for Revenue transactions on his phone app. He was able to see a list of transactions and dates but no details. For some reason, this particular transaction, which would have been for his 2022 tax return, showed up as a total Revenue figure, rather than the actual figure taken on that date, which matched the tax return. The bank teller went through the transaction amounts and the statement with him and it all lines up. TBH I wouldn't have believed it myself if I didn't see the screenshot of the transaction list with my own eyes. It was certainly very confusing.
