I have read the Revenue Guide to claiming health expenses (IT6 http://www.revenue.ie/en/tax/it/leaflets/it6.html) but it did not answer my query.
If a retiree whose only source of income is a pension incurs medical costs, eg 1000 euro, of which 50% is re-imbursed by their health provider, can they make a claim for the other 50% with Revenue via MED1, ie 20% of 500 euros?
I presume that you cannot as this is a tax relief & the retired individual does not pay tax.
However, I just wanted to make sure.
