Responsibility of a director in a limited company

If you were asked to be a director in a limited company but yet were to have no direct involvement in the company, are you as a director liable for everything that goes on in the company yet you would have no knowledge of what is going on?

Has the director to be privy to wrong doings to be held responsible (legally/financially) or is it his/her responsibility to know what is happening within the company in every aspect?
