Resigned from job but still getting paid

A few months ago my sister resigned from her job in a bank and moved out of the country. As she is abroad, she wasn't getting any bank statements and was using her pass card to get money out. However, she recently noticed that she seemed to have money in her account when she believed that she should have nothing. On closer examination it seems that her former employer has continued to pay her for 2 months after she left. Being young, foolish and abroad, she has spent practically all of this. So, I am just wondering what she should do now?

Contact the bank and inform them of the mistake and come to an arrangement with them as to how to pay it back.

At the end of the day its their money, the mistake will come to light eventualy and they will seek reimbursement. By bringing it to their attention now rather than later they might be more inclined to go easy on her rather than come the heavy and seek immediate payback.

Have they asked for the money back ?

Is there any chance she had holidays owning or was paid a month behind ?

No, they haven't asked for the money back. They don't seem to have noticed. When she got paid the first month we thought that maybe she was getting paid the month she worked in advance without pay (although she reckoned that she got that a few days after she left the job). But when she got paid again for a second month, 2 months after she left, we reckoned that it must be an error.

Well if it only went on for two months and nothing has happened since, they obviously did notice it. But probably felt their mistake and did not pursue...Alternatively, your sister may well have been due this money anyway, whether holidays or overpayment of PAYE.
Main thing is that the company obviously noticed, otherwise the payments would have gone on indefinitely. The fact that they noticed, stopped the payments and did not contact your sister at that stage suggests to me that they were happy to leave it at that

the best idea might be to start putting a little aside incase they do come after it...

but as amgd said it's looks like either she was owed the money , or they noticed and don't think it's work going after

I'm not sure that they did notice...her 'old' payday is due again soon so that will tell us whether the payments continue or not. Thanks for the replies everyone.

Tell her to ring them up and ask them to send out her P45 & final payslip as she is no longer working at the bank. The issuing of a P45 by the HR Dept should prompt them to stop the payments if she is not entitled to them.

As some previous posters said, she needs to check that this isnt holiday etc. money she is owed.

Problem solved...a letter arrived at home today for her and when my dad opened it it was a bill for 3,000 euro from her employer (the amount she was overpaid). She rang them and agreed to 1,500 straight away and the rest in instalments which is fair enough of them I think.
