I would like some advise about if I can claim rent relief. I was renting a property prior to December 2010 in UK then renting in Ireland the rent in Ireland has my husband and my selfs name but in UK just my name. I am SAHM husband has my tax credits etc would we be able to claim rent relief?

Hello ,

What years are you trying to claim the credit???

There is a time limit on tax refunds...

When did your current tenancy commence ?? There are special rules in relation to this..

I think the OP’s query is whether the pre December 2010 tenancy in the UK satisfies the condition for claiming rent relief.

Without looking at it, I don’t know.

Citizens information says yes.For a married couple the amount claimable for the last 4 years would be €160.It finished in 2017.
Are you claiming home carers tax credit?

My view is that the UK tenancy satisfies the condition to be a tenant at 7th December 2010. If you were still renting in 2014 to 2017 you can claim the rent tax credit for you both provided you both paid rent. Years prior to 2013 are closed. If is particularly beneficial if either of you are over 55 during any of these years (2014 and after) as there was a higher tax credit for 55s and over.
