Rent Book

The RTB website has this about the start of a tenancy:

  • Have you received a rent book and receipts (if rent not being paid electronically)?
It suggests the rent book is not needed if electronic payments are made.

Also, the SI allows ‘other documentation’ that contains all the information that would be included in an old rent book, that’s usually in a lease now.

However, it does say “Payments not handed over directly, for example those made by bankers order or direct debit, must, not more than 3 months after receipt, either be recorded by the landlord in the rent book or acknowledged by way of statement by the landlord to the tenant.”

I think it’s like any business really, if I’m sending them money every month, I’d like a record from them to confirm they received it. Even if I have my own bank statements saying I sent it.

Managing house rental as an executor until probate completed.
Would a shared Excel file suffice, via Google Drive for example? - read only for Tenant.
Just seeing this thread and thinking of a way to keep a digital rent book, visible by both parties. I’ll enter rent received monthly and date. They can access file and view anytime.
