A friend who is in receipt of disability allowance is considering moving from family home to share an apartment with another of our friends in ashbourne and claiming rent allowance to pay the friend who owns the apartment. Ashbourne is in meath but rents are more akin to dublin but the amount of rent allowance you can claim in meath is only around 60% of amount you can claim in dublin. do social welfare allow for this and give higher rental allowance in certain towns bordering dublin etc?

first of all, Social Welfare do not pay Rent Supplement, the HSE via the Community Welfare Officers do that. Each area sets its own limits on max payable Rent Supplement based on the average market rate in the area. You should scheck with the CWO for the area as to what they apply in the particular town.

Quote from that site "qualify for a rent allowance you must satisfy all of the following conditions:

On 26 July, 1982 you must have been the tenant or the spouse or partner of a tenant, of a dwelling which was subject to rent control until that date. A member of a tenent's family may be eligible for an allowance where they succeeded to the tenancy on or before 25th July 2002. ""

They're two differnet schemes RA almost defunct now.
