Rent a Room Scheme tax treatment

I’m a PAYE taxpayer renting a room in my home to a student for 5,000 annually. Despite reading the revenue guidance and previous posts here I’m still confused over what I need to do regarding Revenue. So I understand I must declare it AFTER the current tax year ends, but before Oct 31 of following year. So now, I can submit a declaration for 2024 as follows?

  • Revenue→ myAccount → Review your tax for the previous 4 years
  • Select your tax year - say 2024
  • Amend (Income Tax Return) - as I’ve already submitted one previously
  • Completing Your Income Tax Return
  • Page 3 - Add Income
    • Rental Income - I understand this section DOES NOT apply to ‘Rent-a-Room’ scheme?
    • Under ‘Other Income’ - ‘Exempt Income’, it says ‘Income entitled to Rent-a-Room Relief’ needs to be included under Tax Credits and Reliefs’ - so this section also DOES NOT apply
    • So I don’t enter anything in this ‘Add Income’ section at all - is that correct?
  • Page 4 - Tax Credits & reliefs - Add tax credits
    • You and your family
    • Rent-a-Room Relief - > I just enter the gross amount of rental income here e.g. 5,000
I think what’s confusing me is that the Revenue refer to it as ‘Rent-a-Room Relief’ - but what you’re actually doing is declaring your extra income in the ‘Tax credits & reliefs’ section, not claiming extra relief or credits - am I correct in this assumption?

Yes, is it explained but not very well in my opinion - for example it explains how to claim the 'relief' and then about half way down the page it says you must declare the income "in the same way that you claim the relief"?

If I'm not mistaken you actually just declare the income in the Relief section?
