I went onto the Laya website and the HIA website and this still seems to be the best for my requirements:
1) Hi-tech hospital cover
2) I don't want day to day expenses covered
3) I don't mind paying an excess

Effectively I just want cover for a catastrophic event and not the type of usual medical expenses one can expect.

This is what I get from the HIA website, so I presume I just renew it automatically.

Yes it seems to meet those criteria.

You should be able to renew through the LAYA website.

I get different results when I select your plan and ask the HIA tool to compare it with the market.

When I use the compare to my present plan tool, I get no options.

Have you the Inpatient Excess ticked?
No. I just chose the "Compare your current plan" option and then selected "Laya Control 600 Connect" from the list. I didn't change any other options/filters.

OK, the phone version seems to be different from the web version.

When I use the desktop version I only get Laya Control 600 Connect listed because the Price filter is automatically set to €0-€1,054.99. I have to increase the upper limit to see any other policies to compare.
