Renaming Dublin airport after Lemass or Parrott

This strikes me as a nonsense idea.

I often find it confusing travelling to a place for the first time and having a meaningless (to me) name for the airport.

It's much easier for visitors if we have Dublin Airport.

Complete nonsense.

I remember years ago a controversy about tourists arriving at the airport wondering where the hell An Lar or Bus Aras was. (Buses back then often had just the Gaelic version on the front.)

I agree. This shouldnt be allowed to happen. Its pointless, meaningless and going to cause confusion and the majority have no interest in calling dublin ajrport anything other than dublin airport.

I agree to an extent.

There is an opportunity to promote tourism though.

If the airport was called say, 'Sinéad O'Connor' airport, and tied into Irish museum, walking tours, cover bands etc, celebrating Irish rock, folk, trad music, in my opinion it would give a great impression of the country for visitors on arrival, and something Dubliners could all get behind and be proud of (the name that is, not the actual airport).

I am fed up with so many things named after politicians though, there is room for sporting legends and cultural legends.

Amiens Street, Westland Row and Kingsbridge.
It must be an age thing because I always call them Connolly, Pearse and Heuston station
but Bray was Bray and Dun Laoghaire was never referred to as Kingstown except by way older people than me

The Point is The Point, same with Parc na Chaoimh but Lansdowne is more often than not referred to as Aviva now

But more importantly a Marathon is now a Snickers, especially when Mrs C is having a meltdown ;)

Despite his strong Republican leanings, my late father always referred to Portlaoise as Maryborough. pronounced "Marraborough" :)

Oh and Dublin Airport was always Collinstown.

Ah yes...what's in a name? My cousin arrived from France and told me that they'd consulted their map en-route and decided to stop for lunch in the charming "Port Louise" . When you try to pronounce it in French well, you see what I mean.

I like O'Leary Airport....think David, Michael, John ( the Fenian and the golfer)
September 1913 by Yeats has this

Was it for this the wild geese spread
The grey wing upon every tide;
For this that all that blood was shed,
For this Edward Fitzgerald died,
And Robert Emmet and Wolfe Tone,
All that delirium of the brave?
Romantic Ireland’s dead and gone,
It’s with O’Leary in the grave.

And something about a 'greasy till' also....

Love a bit of poetry....

Super Valu Páirc Uí Chaoimh is generally referred to as The Park in Cork. Incidentally, if you come to Cork for any reason parking near Páirc Uí Chaoimh is free and there are several "greenways" which start in the same area. You could do worse than stopping off at nearby Blackrock Castle for lunch or dinner too. But, enjoy the scenic area and it's free and magnificent.

I walk the new "Marina walk" very regularly. It's a fantastic asset to the city!

Anyone out West ever try to find Claregalway using signposts? Good luck with that. :)
